If the tank of your motorcycle has rust and oxidation, it needs to be removed.
Removing rust from a motorcycle tank is a crucial operation to ensure the proper functioning of the vehicle and to prevent further damage. By using our Concentrated Rust Remover Phosphating and Pickling Acid, you can effectively eliminate oxidation and stop rust from spreading. Here is a detailed guide on how to proceed.
Product Features
Our concentrated rust remover and blocker acid is ideal for treating metal sheets and motorcycle tanks affected by persistent formations of metal oxides. The product can be diluted and reused, offering an effective and sustainable treatment. The acid should be used once or, at most, twice. After this process, the item should be treated with liquid ceramic or the correct paints.
To use the acid properly, it must be mixed with tap water before use.
Preparation of the Mixture
Ingredients:
- 150 ml of concentrated acid
- 600 ml of tap water
Instructions:
Mixing: In a plastic jug, mix 150 ml of acid with 600 ml of water. If the rust is particularly stubborn, use a more concentrated mixture of 100 ml of acid and 50 ml of water. Pour it into the tank and leave it to act for at least 1 hour. After this time, empty the tank and check the condition. If rust is still present, filter it through a strainer and pour it back into the tank, repeating the operation. Once finished, empty the tank and wash it with pink alcohol. After emptying, dry it with a blower and immediately apply the Tankerize liquid ceramic. If it's for car or motorcycle parts or other items, paint them with Kustomservice primer. IMPORTANT: This operation should be done within one hour of drying the acid, otherwise, it will dry and new rust will form quickly.
Precautions: Wear protective gloves and ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area. The activated acid does not affect the paint if it is not left on the surface for long. If the paint is soiled, simply clean it immediately, and nothing will happen.
Application of Rust Remover
For Motorcycle Tanks:
- Pouring the Mixture: Fill the tank with the prepared mixture.
- Waiting Time: Allow the mixture to work for 30 minutes on each side of the tank. This ensures that the acid has enough time to attack the rust. If there is a lot of rust, let it act for up to 1 hour.
- Draining: After treatment, drain the tank.
For Other Items or Flat Sheets:
- Brush Application: Apply the mixture with a brush on the oxidized parts and leave it to act for 30-60 minutes.
- Immersion: Alternatively, immerse the pieces in a plastic container filled with the mixture. Always immerse for 30-60 minutes.
- Waiting Time: Leave it to act for the necessary time until the rust is completely removed. The recommended time is as stated above.
Cleaning the Pieces
- Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly with a mixture of water and pink alcohol in equal parts.
- Washing with Pink Alcohol: Wash again with just pink alcohol to eliminate any residue.
- Drying: Dry thoroughly to prevent the formation of new rust. Use compressed air or a heat gun to remove any residual moisture.
Reusing the Acid
The rust remover acid can be filtered to remove rust residue and reused. However, its descaling power will be reduced compared to the first use. Ensure to filter carefully for the best results.
Disposal of Residue
Do not dispose of the used acid in the household sink. Contact a body shop or a specialized waste disposal company for the safe disposal of the residue.
Final Considerations
- Preventive Tests: Although the acid is formulated not to attack materials other than metal, it is advisable to test it on a small area before treating the entire piece.
- Safety: Always wear protective gloves and work in a well-ventilated area to avoid exposure to potentially harmful fumes.
By following these steps, you will be able to effectively remove rust from your motorcycle tank, ensuring greater longevity and optimal vehicle performance. Good luck!
What to do after using the acid
Within no more than 1 hour after cleaning the acid, apply the Tankerize ceramic paint to the tank, which helps prevent rust from coming back. If a protective paint is not applied to the sheet metal within 2 hours, rust will reform, and you will need to repeat the entire process.
